Might that make an interesting blog entry? Get the fanboys chatting? Wouldn’t need to be much more than what you had below, cleaned up and toned down a half-shade.” So said our technical director, Frank Markus. I had fired off an angry email to him.
Here’s what I wrote Frank in reference to Mercedes claiming 60 years of SL, with most of the expletives removed and the text fleshed out a little (Warning: some expletives remain):
“Uh, no it ain’t. However, that’s what Mercedes is running around saying. The 300 SL (W198) went into production in 1954. Now, there was an SL in 1952, but it was a racecar. Of the 11 built, only one was missing a roof, but that’s hardly any sort of series anything. I’m steamed because they just casually throw this garbage out at events and no one bothers to challenge them on it!”
For instance, at the SL thingy I attended the other day on the Warner Brothers lot, the guy from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center says, ‘It’s the SL’s 60th birthday, making it the longest running nameplate in automotive history.’ So I cried double bullshit, stating that the Corvette’s been in production since 1953. Which, when you scrub away all the marketing crud is one year longer. At best, it’s a tie as, true, there was no 1983 Corvette (though 1982 Corvettes were on sale in 1983). But then the Classic Center guy said they’re talking about a continuous running nameplate.
